The interoperability of public tourism data is an essential issue for the management of a tourist destination, and even more when the destination is cross-border.

The partners of the Smart Destination project, 85% of which is financed by the European INTERREG MARITTIMO programme, have developed a computer prototype that provides access, in real time and in a common format, to the public tourism data of Tuscany, Liguria, Sardinia and the Nice Côte d'Azur metropolitan area.

Project Presentation.

The Nice Côte d'Azur Metropolis, partner in the project, organises the international conference on the Smart Destination project, which will take place over two online afternoons: 15 - 16 June from 2 to 5 pm.
The first day will focus on the challenge of data interoperability for tourism promotion and information. The expert round table will be composed of the Andalusia Region, the PACA Region, the European CPMR network, the Managing Authority of the INTERREG France - Italy Maritime programme, the University of Venice and the Canton of Vaud in Switzerland. Each of them has experience in data interoperability. The second day will focus on the issue of accessibility and standardisation of public tourism data for marketing.
The round table will be composed by private actors: AMADEUS, APIDAE Tourism and three tourism companies: the American tour operator Imark, the tourism application My VIZITO and the transport application NUGO. They will tell us about their data collection, and how access to standardised public data would be useful for their business development.
To learn more about the Smart Destination project, at the end of the round table, there will be a debate between the experts and the project partners.

The Smart Destination project funded by the European Interreg Marittimo Franco-Italian programme is a comprehensive example of cross-border cooperation in the heart of the Mediterranean.
The partnership has identified a general problem concerning existing tourist information systems that do not organise data in a homogeneous way, and the lack of sharing datas between systems.
The overall objective of the project is to facilitate the development of quality cross-border tourism, from the preparation of the trip to the proposal of activities once there, and to improve the management of the tourist destination.
Technically, the partners had to design and develop a platform for exchanging tourist information in order to make cross-border tourism more fluid and to increase the economic benefits and the competitiveness of the tourist ecosystem of the partner regions (Nice Côte d'Azur Metropolis, Tuscany Region, Liguria Region, Autonomous Region of Sardinia, CAT Confesercenti Pisa, Tuscany System Foundation, PACA Regional Chamber of Commerce and Industry)
Results achieved:

  1. The 4 SMART DESTINATION platforms are online: Tuscany Region, Liguria Region, Sardinia Region, Nice Côte d'Azur Metropolis
  2. Local tourism data are replicated and updated in real time
  3. Tourism data from the 4 platforms are organised in common data models
  4. The data of the 4 platforms are accessible to each other
To demonstrate how the system works, the partnership has developed two test applications
